Toronto hands over the organisers’ mantle to Mexico City at the close of the 16th International Aids Conference.
The closing keynote speech came from UN special envoy for AIDs in Africa Stephen Lewis, who told delegates that in many parts of Africa women now formed the majority of victims – and that there cause was an urgent priority.
“The most vexing aspect of the pandemic is what is happening to women,” said Lewis.
Anti-viral creams offer hope of increased protection for women, but the international community has persistently failed to deliver promised funding for anti-AIDs programmes.
Nearly 3 million people died of the disease last year – and half a million of the victims are children infected at birth.
