As the ceasefire holds, thousands of Lebanese are returning to their bombed-out homes, to salvage what they can from the debris. A massive cleanup and rebuilding operation is due to get underway soon. Israel’s war with Hizbollah killed 1100 Lebanese. Dozens of bodies remain trapped under the rubble. 42 have been dug out in the last two days alone, and that figure is expected to rise steeply over the coming days and weeks.
Further south, where fighting was fiercest, rescue workers are only now reaching some villages. Unexploded bombs dropped during the 34-day conflict make the return home especially perilous for some.
