Possible Palestinian coalition may recognise Israel

It is the first step towards forming a broader Palestinian government. President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of the ruling Islamist party Hamas have agreed to hold talks on a coalition platform that would include implicit recognition of Israel.

“We have agreed to start discussions to form the government, based on the national Unity Agreement,” said Hanieyh. “This will help lift the embargo placed on the Palestinians, lighten their suffering and achieve the release of ministers and parliamentarians. I hope these talks are fruitful.”

In Gaza City mourners marched in a funeral procession for two Palestinan men killed in an Israeli air strike on Tuesday night. Residents identified the victims as a member of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and his father – apparently not a member of the militant group.

Meanwhile, Palestinian police are still searching for two kidnapped foreign journalists. A Fox News correspondent and a freelance cameraman were snatched in Gaza City on Monday evening.
