Israel continued to launch air strikes on Lebanon in the hours counting down to today’s UN-brokered ceasefire. Police sources say infantry and armoured vehicles gave up their attempts to take the border town of Khiam due to stiff resistance by Hizbollah fighters. It was claimed at least 42 people were killed across the country, with more than 90 injured and some still reported missing.
In Beirut, 15 bodies were pulled from the rubble of a flattened apartment building. Rescuers say 20 people were injured in the raids. The bombardment by Israeli jets and artillery also continued in the coastal city of Tyre. Sources say five people were killed here. Witnesses said 8 civilians died and 14 were injured when warplanes pounded villages near Baalbek in the north-east of the country.
