UK airport security checks lead to 4th day of chaos

The weather only added to the inconvenience for the hundreds of passengers delayed at Britain’s Heathrow airport as new, stringent security checks led to a fourth day of delays.

People are only being allowed to carry essential hand luggage after police said they foiled a plot to blow up several aircraft using liquid explosives.

British Airways has cancelled a third of its Heathrow flights and more than 20 from nearby Gatwick while Ryanair scrapped over 30 from Stansted.

BA has called on airport operator BAA to boost resources, while BAA described the situation as “unprecedented”, saying public safety was the utmost priority.

Meanwhile Home Secretary John Reid says at least four major terrorist plots have been thwarted since last July.
