Cuban leaders move to calm fears over Castro

A leading Cuban intellectual and politician has caused a stir by using the world “succession” with regard to the ailing Fidel Castro. Roberto Fernandez Retamar, a writer and member of the Council of State, told reporters the US government expected chaos after Castro handed power to his brother Raul. “The official policy of the American administration was that when Castro was not in power in Cuba, chaos would invade in the country. Well, Castro is no longer in power and chaos has not invaded the country. They hadn’t expected that a peaceful succession was possible but a peaceful succession has taken place in Cuba,” he said.

It is not clear if by that he was implying it would be a permanent move. However .. Cuba’s vice-president Carlos Lage says Fidel Castro is recovering well in hospital and should be fit enough to return to work within weeks. On a trip to South America the vice-president also insisted that Raul is only temporarily in charge until Fidel recovers completely.
