The Israeli emergency services say at least three people died and 160 were injured when a wave of Hizbollah rockets fell on the port of Haifa. Fire quickly took hold in an apartment block, which collapsed after a direct hit. Eyewitnesses say the worst damage was inflicted in Wadi Nisnas, one of several Arab neighbourhoods in Israel’s third largest city. It is estimated that Hizbollah has fired more than 3,000 rockets into northern Israel since the conflict began.
The attack happened at around 8 o’clock in the evening local time. Eyewitnesses say it caught the people of Haifa by surprise. Many had just emerged from bomb shelters during an apparent lull in the missile war. Rescuers dug frantically with their bare hands to try and reach those trapped in the rubble. Five survivors were pulled from the debris. Earlier in the day, 12 Israeli military reservists were killed by a Hizbollah rocket. That attack, combined with the strike in Haifa, made the 26th day of the conflict the deadliest so far for Israel.
