Israel continues to shell southern Lebanon

Day 26 of the Israeli bombardment of southern Lebanon has seen 3 Chinese UN peacekeepers wounded in attacks. The coastal town of Tyre was hit hard by strikes yesterday and more bombardments followed today as workers tried to repair electricity lines. Aid agencies distributed relief to those that remained in the largely-deserted town.

In Ansar, just north of the border, one man and four of his relatives were killed in one early-morning strike. Eight others were injured. The death toll in Lebanon since the start of the conflict creeps towards a thousand.

Israel says it’s trying to clear the area north of the border, to eliminate Hizbollah fighters launching rockets across the border into Israel’s northern towns.

There has been further shelling today of the mainly Shiite districts of southern Beirut. Heavy bombardments on Beirut yesterday cut off bridges to the capital. Strikes on the Bekaa valley in east Lebanon have also destroyed transport routes there, making the area extremely difficult to access.
