UN fails to find breakthrough on resolution

world news

Talks at the United Nations have failed to bring about agreement on a Security Council resolution calling for an end to the Middle East crisis. French Ambassador Jean-Marc de la Sablière said he was less confident than on Wednesday that a deal could be adopted within days to end the conflict.

Negotiators have also been looking at the option of boosting the UN peacekeeping mission already in southern Lebanon to force an end to the fighting until a more robust international force can be formed.

A main sticking point appears to be Israel’s insistence on the right to take “defensive action” against Hizbollah fighters launching attacks during a truce.
