At least eight civilians have been killed in a Hizbollah rocket attack in northern Israel. The guerrilla group reportedly fired more than 130 missiles over the border. Dozens of people were injured. The villages of Acre and Maalot bore the brunt of the assault which brings the number of Israeli civilians killed in the conflict to 27.

It is the deadliest attack on Israel since the July 16 assault on nearby Haifa which claimed eight lives. The Mediterranean port city has repeatedly been the target of Hizbollah attacks. The Israeli army has also confirmed the death of two of its soldiers in border fighting in southern Lebanon.
