The Israeli army says its commandos have seized three Hizbollah militants during an operation in the north eastern Lebanese town of Baalbek. A spokeswoman said the captured militants have been taken to Israel. It is claimed none of the Israeli troops who took part in the operation were injured. The attack, penetrating 100 kilometres north of the border, is the deepest incursion by Israel into Lebanon during the three-week war.

Baalbek, 83 kilometres east of the capital Beirut, is renowned as being a regional stronghold of Hizbollah. At least seven civilians including five from the same family, were killed during a covering air strike which formed part of the Baalbek operation. Lebanese security services said they died when warplanes bombarded the village of Jammaliyeh during the clashes nearby between Israeli commandos and Hizbollah guerrillas.
