More than 70 rockets fired by Hizbollah guerrillas have hit towns across northern Israel injuring around a dozen people. The heavy barrage marks a sharp increase in attacks after a two-day lull in activity by the Lebanese militant group. Hizbollah forces are also said to be fighting thousands of Israeli soldiers on five fronts with Israeli artillery pounding frontier villages. The Israeli army says its commandoes have seized three Hizbollah militants during an operation in the north eastern town of Baalbek. The attack, penetrating 100 kilometres north of the border, is the deepest incursion by Israel into Lebanon during the three week war.
Baalbek is renowned as being a regional stronghold of Hizbollah. At least 7 civilians including five from the same family, were killed during a covering air strike which formed part of the Baalbek operation. Lebanese security services said they died when warplanes bombarded the village of Jammaliyeh during the clashes nearby between Israeli commandos and Hizbollah guerrillas.
