Dozens killed in Israeli attack on Lebanese village

Dozens of people have been killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon. Witnesses say the pre-dawn bombing of the village of Qana has left at least 50 people dead including about 20 children. Qana is east of the port city of Tyre which has come under heavy Israeli bombing during the conflict.

One four storey building has collapsed – rescue workers have been raking through the rubble with their bare hands to find survivors. It is a gruesome task. Witnesses report seeing dead mothers being pulled out clinging desperately to their children – who despite their parent’s best efforts – did not survive. Israel says the attack is legitimate and blames Hizbollah for the civilian deaths accusing the group of using Qana as a launching ground for rocket attacks.
