There has been a second day of travel chaos at Barcelona airport with thousands of passengers stranded in the wake of a strike by 2,000 ground staff working for national airline, Iberia. More than half of Friday’s flights were cancelled after workers swarmed onto the runway and blocked traffic for most of the day during one of the holiday season’s busiest weekends.
“It was like a battle on the runway,” one man said. “The civil guard were scuffling with us and then the workers. It’s shameful.”
The Iberia workers held the strike after the company lost the licence to handle operations at the airport. Many employees now fear for their future.
“If it shuts down, 2,000 families will be on the street,” one worker said. “If people in other firms like Seat can fight to keep them in Catalonia, so can we.”
Traffic has been slowly returning to normal. However the knock-on effect of the strike is likely to be felt for many hours to come.
