Israel targets Hizbollah in ground raids

Israeli tanks converged on the border with Lebanon as the conflict with Hizbollah intensified. In a significant development Israeli troops mounted three ground raids into its northern neighbour. Israel said two of its soldiers had been killed in the operation which targeted Aitaroun and other border areas. An Arabic language news channel said up to six soldiers had been killed but Israel has not commented on this.

There have been further airstrikes on targets in Lebanon. A UN base sheltering civilians was hit by two artillery shells but no one was injured. Hizbollah has also renewed its rocket attacks on northern Israel. Almost 300 people in Lebanon and 25 in Israel have been killed in more than a week of combat. It was sparked by a Hizbollah raid in which eight Israeli soldiers were killed and two kidnapped.

Israel says its response was intended to halt rocket attacks on its territory.
