Shrugging off US and Israeli reluctance, Kofi Annan says he expects European nations to contribute troops to a proposed beefed-up stabilisation force to end fighting in southern Lebanon.

“I would expect a force that is considerably larger than the 2,000 force that is there,” he said in Brussels.

“I would expect a force that will have a modified and a different concept of operation and with different capabilities.

“I would expect contributions from European countries and countries from other regions.”

The United Nations Secretary-General was speaking after talks with the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
