EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana reports back to foreign ministers in Brussels today after a surprise visit to Beirut, in which he called for an end to the cross-border conflict. “Those who have the possibility or influence to stop the violence (should) do so and do it immediately,” he said.
Solana, who held talks with Lebanese leaders, said his was strictly a fact-finding mission. It’s part of diplomatic efforts being spearheaded by the UN, which has sent a team to Lebanon to seek a solution to the crisis. For its part, the EU has called Israel’s attacks in Lebanon “disproportionate”. However it has urged both sides to show restraint.
