A rocket attack on the Israeli port of Haifa on Sunday has left eight dead and at least fourteen injured, some seriously. One of the missiles hit a train depot, as panicked residents rush to bomb shelters. The rockets were fired by Hezbollah from across the Lebanese border, in response to heavy Israeli air strikes on Beirut and southern Lebanon.
Haifa is Israel’s third largest city with a population of around a quarter of a million. It is the deadliest rocket strike by Hezbollah on Israel in ten years. Israeli Prime Minister has promised that the attack will have “far-reaching consequences” for Lebanon. The bombardment of Lebanese targets now looks certain to intensify, and the death toll certain to climb.
