Israel has intensified its air attacks on Lebanon, concentrating them on the southern suburbs of Beirut. Residents have been inspecting the damage from overnight bombing that hit bridges in the capital. Witnesses said two people were killed in their car after a bridge collapsed on the road to the airport.
Thousands of leaflets in Arabic and signed “The State of Israel” have been dropped over the suburbs, warning people to avoid staying in “areas where Hizbollah is present and operating”.
Amid fears of prolonged violence, some Beirut residents have been stocking up on food and queuing for petrol. The European Union and Russia have criticised Israel’s strikes in Lebanon as disproportionate, and Arab foreign ministers are to meet in Cairo tomorrow to discuss the crisis.
