George W Bush has taken a relatively soft tone with Israel, defending its right to self defence.
But the US president, who has been holding talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, said Israel should not weaken the Lebanese government.

“Israel has a right to defend herself. Every nation must defend herself against terrorist attacks and the killing of innocent life, it’s a necessary part of the 21st century,” he said.

Bush visited a medieval church with Merkel before a wild boar barbeque at a Baltic sea resort.

The pair are keen to show their closer ties after Germany under Merkel’s predecessor opposed the war in Iraq.

On the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme they said the UN Security Council would consider what to do next.
