The abduction of the Israeli soldiers in Lebanon inspired the same kind of celebration in Gaza as it did in parts of Beirut. But the violence has not let up. Two Palestinians died in an Israeli artillery attack on Khan Younis in southern Gaza – bringing the total number of Palestinians killed on Wednesday to at least 18.
Israeli forces continue to search for the soldier abducted at the end of June, and try to prevent Palestinian rocket attacks on their territory. Earlier tanks pushed into the area around the former Gush Katif Jewish settlement, taking control of a major road and effectively cutting the strip in two.
An aircraft also dropped a quarter-ton bomb on a house in Gaza in an attempt to kill Mohammed Deif, the leader of the military wing of Hamas. He survived, but nine members of one Palestinian family were killed.
