Russia’s most wanted man, Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev, has reportedly been killed during an overnight operation by special forces.

According to Nikolai Patrushev, the FSB security chief, Basayev was killed together with other fighters on Sunday night in Ingushetia, a southern region which lies next to Chechnya.

Patrushev said Basayev was planning a terrorist attack in Ingushetia to coincide with this weekend’s G8 summit in St. Petersburg.
