The European Commission has called on Member States’ authorities to take swift action to prevent injury and loss of life involving mini-motorbikes.
The risk of serious accidents has prompted suggestions for sampling and testing, and
withdrawal from the market of unsafe products
A spokesman in Brussels said:
“These motobikes are not toys but they are appealing to children, and they do not meet the required safety standards and can kill.”
Reports have reached the Commission of five deaths from accidents involving these vehicles in the UK, and at least one in Sweden.
All the EU countries have been asked to draw up a report on them.
The motor vehicles fall under EU legislation on machinery and are not allowed on public roads.
