Criminal probe opened after Siberia plane crash

Prosecutors in Russia have opened a criminal inquiry after a plane crash in Siberia that has killed at least 124 people. It is thought human error or brake failure caused the Sibir airlines plane to career of the runway after landing in the city of Irkutsk.

An airline spokesman says the plane was checked just before the flight from Moscow and everything was in order. At least 55 people survived the crash, and most are being treated for burns. Rescuers have spoken of the terrible scene.

“There were many burnt people,” said an ambulance spokesman. “We treated five or six people lying on the ground. There were explosions coming from the garages and the plane itself.”

Some relatives are still waiting to find out if their loved ones were among those killed. The plane smashed into garages near the runway after what witnesses say was a smooth initial touchdown. Investigators hope analysis of the black box flight recorders will throw more light on exactly what happened.
