Holiday flight crashes in Irkutsk

It is feared most of the 200 passengers and crew on a holiday flight to Siberia have died in a crash on landing at Irkutsk airport. Atleast 120 bodies have been recovered so far. The airbus A310 exploded into flames after it overshot the runway and crashed into a wall. For the moment the causes of the crash, and the exact number of victims is unknown, although the authorities have released differing figures of at least 60 for the number of people taken to hospital.

The flight was taking people for a holiday to the Lake Baikal region, and was carrying a number of children. Some 600 rescue workers fought for three hours to extinguish the blaze, but thick smoke was still billowing from the wreckage this morning, with only the plane’s tail section undamaged by the crash.
