Could twins be about to engage in a political scenario they categorically ruled out only last October? President Lech Kaczynski may be about to ask brother Jaroslaw to become Poland’s next prime minister, following the resignation of Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz from the job.
Marcinkiewicz is currently riding high above the brothers in opinion polls, but came into conflict with them over the appointment of the Finance Minister, a pro-market pro-european like himself. He is a member of the coalition-leading Law and Justice party, led by Jaroslaw, which governs in alliance with hard-right and euro-sceptic parties.
Both Jaroslaw and his brother are publicly critical of several aspects of the EU. Poland’s press, and many people, are critical of the brother’s actions; “It’s a total disaster, I don’t even know what to think about it… I don’t even want to imagine…” “I’m unhappy, it’s not good having two family members running the country”… “You never know. Everything’s ahead of us and we might get a nice surprise”…were just some of the reactions on the streets of Warsaw.
While it is not sure Jaroslaw will take over, his party is expected to nominate him in a meeting today.
