The north west region of Calabria has been hit by torrential rain which has caused landslips in places. There have been complaints from some locals that help is taking too long to arrive. One of the victims – a shepherd – was struck by lightning.
A 15-month-old girl was washed over a precipice in a car with her father. After several hours of searching, rescuers were able to save him but could do nothing for her. Two other people died when their car was caught in a mudslide. It’s not known how the fifth person died.
The Italian president has sent his condolences to the families and it’s reported that Prime Minister Romano Prodi will visit the area on Tuesday.
