More Mideast attacks but new hopes for peace

There have been more military strikes against the Palestinian leadership but there are hopes of a breakthrough to end the latest violence in the Middle East. The office of the Interior Minister in Gaza was destroyed in an overnight attack as Israel pushes for the release of one its soldiers being held by militants. Israeli missiles also slammed into an office belonging to President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah group and a Hamas training camp outside Gaza City.

Israel has said it holds the Hamas government responsible for the safe return of the corporal who was abducted by gunmen during a clash on Sunday. Israeli forces have seized several members of Hamas group, including government ministers, in the West Bank.

But mediation continues amid the soaring tensions and Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarek is reported to have said Hamas has given conditional approval for the soldier’s release. But, in an interview with an Arabic newspaper, he has been quoted as saying no handover agreement with the Israelis has yet been reached.
