Cabinet ministers and MPs were among the senior Hamas figures rounded up by Israel in its West Bank blitz. Israeli sources said 64 Hamas officials in all were taken into custody. Israel holds Hamas responsible for the abduction of Corporal Gilad Shalit. Hamas political leaders deny any involvement in planning Sunday’s attack by the movement’s armed wing and other factions. Israeli air attacks have knocked out power and water supplies in Gaza.
A strike today targeted a football field at the Hamas-backed Islamic University. Another caused a fire in what Israel said was a weapons storage depot. Palestinians said it was an appliance shop.
There were no reported casualties.
As the people of Gaza deal with the damage, Israeli warplanes flew low over one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s palaces, breaking the sound barrier in an implied threat to exiled Damascus-based Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal and his Syrian host.
