Moscow confirms death of hostages in Iraq

The Russian government has confirmed the killing of four embassy workers by Iraqi insurgents. Final word came in a communiqué issued by the foreign ministry, following analysis of a grisly video posted on the internet by an al Qaeda-linked group. It showed the killing of three of the men, kidnapped earlier this month in Baghdad.

European officials condemned the murders. “If this turns out to be true and as far as I know it is true, it reveals once again the bloody logic of terror and I utterly condemn it of course and I do this also on behalf of the assembly,” said Rene van der Linden, the head of the European Parliamentary Council. It is the first such video killing for several months. More than a dozen foreign nationals kidnapped in the past 18 months remain unaccounted for.
