The UN-mandated high representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schwarz-Schilling, has been meeting European Commission officials to discuss the closing of his office within a year.

Some analysts and politicians on the ground worry this could unravel progress; others see the closure, concluding a nearly 12-year post-war protectorate phase, as a sign that life in Bosnia is returning to normal.

Schwarz-Schilling will remain EU Special Representative.

He said that to knit closer ties with the EU, the country must function without outsiders arbitrating between its Croat, Muslim and Serb ethnic groups.
