Around 200 English football fans are being held in police cells in Stuttgart after violent clashes with German supporters on Saturday.
Riot police intervened as both sets of fans threw punches, bottles and chairs in the town centre. Tens of thousands of supporters watched Germany’s win over Sweden on a big screen. Trouble started shortly after the final whistle. England fans were in the city ahead of tomorrow’s game with Ecuador.German police detained 120 fans in the city on Friday under preventative orders that do not constitute a full arrest. Supporters can be held for drunken, threatening or aggressive conduct and it’s expected they’ll stay in cells until after Sunday’s match. Banning orders imposed on known trouble-makers before the tournament had meant few problems up to now.
