Saudis kill six al-Qaeda suspects

Saudi police have killed six suspected al-Qaeda militants who they claim were planning an attack. One officer also died in the shootout in the capital Riyadh. The clash in the early hours of the morning reportedly saw security services chase the group to a house in an upmarket residential district of the city.

A seventh alleged militant was wounded and arrested. The Saudi news agency described the suspects’ base as a “hideout for crime, corruption….aggression and outrage.” The government says they were linked to a “deviant group” – its label for the al-Qaeda network headed by Osama bin Laden, who was born in Saudi Arabia. Islamist activists want to overthrow the Saudi monarchy and expel Westerners from the country.
