A particularly brutal battle in a Guatemalan prison has left four inmates dead.
At least five others were wounded in a clash between rival gangs at the facility for young people in San Jose Pinula, 20 kilometres east of the capital Guatemala City.
It is reported that one of the victims was shot dead and others were beaten to death with concrete blocks after their hands were cut off.
“The kids say an enemy gang entered their sector and the confrontation started,” one fireman said.
The country’s prisons have frequently come under the spotlight for overcrowding and violence, a problem compounded by gangs or “maras” which regularly attack each other not just in jails but on the streets of Guatemala.
