More US soldiers have been charged with premeditated murder in Iraq. Seven Marines and a Navy medic have been accused over the killing of a disabled Iraqi man in April. It is alleged the victim was shot and that the accused tried to make it look as if he had been planting a roadside bomb.
Four soldiers have been charged with premeditated murder in another case involving the deaths of three detainees. All the defendants could possibly face the death penalty if found guilty.
An investigation is continuing into claims US soldiers killed 24 civilians in the village of Haditha last November. There have been a number of instances of misconduct by US troops in Iraq but military leaders insist the vast majority of American troops have conducted themselves honourably.
