President George W.Bush and his wife Laura have been welcomed to the presidential palace in Hungary. The country’s President Laszlo Solyom led the welcoming party. Bush is in Budapest to be present at the 50th anniversary commemorations of the 1956 Hungarian uprising against the Soviet regime.
He is due to make a speech advocating the importance of democracy in an area which has long been dominated by Russia. But aides to Bush say it will not be a policy address and should not be seen as a signal to Moscow.
Later the US President is to meet Hungary’s leading politicians in the wake of yesterday’s annual US summit with European leaders in Vienna. President Bush will return to Washington this evening.
