Woman dies in Gaza as Israeli airstrike misses target

The spiral of violence continues between Israel and the Palestinians. An Israeli missile killed one woman and injured another seven Palestinians when it hit a house in the Gaza strip. Some of those hurt are said to be children. Witnesses say it was an airstrike on a car that went wrong.

Israeli raids in recent days have killed at least 12 Palestinian civilians, many of them very young. Earlier the Gaza strip’s main international gateway was closed at Rafah.European monitors say this was due to a security alert, but the Hamas-led Palestinian government says it was to stop the carrying of cash into Gaza, sidestepping a Western aid embargo. In the West Bank, in Nablus, four people were injured as Israeli troops entered the town in armoured jeeps. The military incursion follows an overnight raid by Israeli troops into the same area in which they report that a Palestinian militant was shot dead. Israel has defended the attacks, saying they are essential to combat rocket fire into Israel from Palestinian militant groups.
