Bush faces protests in Vienna

world news

| |

“You say soccer, we say football,” but the name of the beautiful game is not all that divides Europe and the United States. Demonstrators gathering on the streets of Vienna are protesting against a number of issues, not least among them the United States’ continued presence in Iraq and the stand off with Iran over its nuclear ambitions.

But the issue that is likely to overshadow all others is the US prison at Guantanamo Bay. Demonstrators want the facility closed, especially after the suicides of three detainees. Bush has so far fended off calls to close the jail by saying he is waiting for a US Supreme Court decision about how to handle the detainees.
