At least 61 people have been killed in a suspected mine attack on a civilian bus in Sri Lanka. Many more were wounded in the explosion in Anduradhapura district, 200 kilometres north of the capital, Colombo. It is by far the most serious incident involving civilians since Tamil Tiger rebels agreed a ceasefire with the government in 2002.

The Tamil Tigers have denied responsibility, but the government blames the group and has responded by bombarding rebel positions.
