Peacekeeping plan in Somalia

world news

| |

With their country gripped by internal conflict and political instability hundreds of Somalis have taken to the streets in support of a plan to deploy peacekeepers.

The demonstration took place in Baidoa, the seat of the weakened transitional government whose proposal for the deployment of regional troops was approved by the parliament on Wednesday. After months of fighting Islamic militia took control of the capital Mogadishu and other key towns, driving out an alliance of secular warlords. The interim government is Somalia’s 15th attempt to bring central government to a country where warlord-control has prevailed since 1991.
