Two girls missing amid paedophile fears in Belgium

Police in Belgium searched all day yesterday but there was no trace of two girls missing in Liege in the east of the country. All areas have been checked, including along the Meuse river. Stacy Lemmen, 7, and her half sister, Nathalie Mahy, aged 10, disappeared late on Friday night near the café “Aux Armuriers” – their mother was drinking there till one am.

Anne Bourgignont, the public prosecutor for Liege, says a key witness could be the boyfriend of one of the waitresses in the café. “I call on him as a witness because he hasn’t been seen since 1.30am on Saturday morning. He isn’t at home and maybe he saw something, that’s all.” Locals are haunted by memories of the paedophile and murderer Marc Dutroux who killed two girls – Julie and Melissa – from the same town over a decade ago. It’s no surprise that the whole community is on alert.
