Bush makes surprise visit to Baghdad

US President George W Bush has made a surprise visit to the Iraqi capital Baghdad to meet the new prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki.

The pair was meant to have a videoconference as Bush chaired a National Security Council gathering on Iraq’s future at Camp David. But White House officials say the president wanted to meet Maliki face to face so “they can establish a closer relationship.” Afterwards, Bush expressed his support for the Iraqi government’s new security measures which include a night time curfew and a ban on all vehicle traffic on Friday lunchtimes to try to curb attacks during Friday prayers. The trip follows the death last week of al-Qaeda’s leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in a US air strike.
