Scores of casualties in Israeli train crash

A number of people are reported to have been killed in a rail accident in Israel. Scores of people have been injured after a commuter train smashed into a truckthat was crossing the tracks, near the central city of Netanya. A police spokesman said the first two carriages of the train, which was travelling from Tel Aviv to Haifa, were derailed.

A witness said the truck simply stopped on the rail line and that the driver managed to get out before the train hit it. An emergency operation is underway and a number of people were trapped inside the wreckage. It is the second major rail accident in recent years in Israel. In June 2005, seven people were killed and more than 150 injured when a passenger train hit a vehicle south of Tel Aviv.
