Road accident caused fatal Israeli train crash

Investigators in Israel believe a road accident at a level crossing was the cause of a train derailment that left at least five people dead and scores more injured. Witnesses say a van was hit from behind by another vehicle and pushed onto the track.

The van driver got out but a short time later the train smashed into it, causing the engine and front three carriages to veer off the rail line. Around two hundred people were on board the train, which was travelling from Tel Aviv to Haifa. Large numbers of passengers were trapped inside the wreckage for some time. Rescue workers eventually managed to free the victims but were unable to save everyone. Israeli authorities say there is no suggestion the derailment was anything other than a tragic accident.
