Rice says US ready to talk to Iran

Condoleezza Rice has signaled a significant shift in US policy towards Iran. The US Secretary of State said Washington would talk with Tehran if it proves it has suspended its nuclear enrichment programme.

“As soon as Iran fully and verifiably suspends its enrichment and reprocessing activites, the United States will come to the table and sit with our EU colleagues and meet with Iranian representatives,” she said. Western countries suspect Iran is enriching uranium to build nuclear weapons, a claim it denies. The new approach from Washington could bring about the closest diplomatic contact between the US and Iran since the Islamic Revolution 27 years ago. Britain, France and Germany have put together a package of incentives for Iran to give up its nuclear ambitions.
