More than 4,000 people are now known to have died after a powerful earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Java.

At least 10,000 others are thought to have been injured when the quake, measuring 6.2, flattened buildings south of the ancient city of Yogyakarta. A desperate search for survivors is continuing and an urgent appeal has been launched for aid and health staff. Several aftershocks have been reported, forcing doctors and volunteers to treat the overwhelming number of casualties in the grounds of hospitals.
