Sounds of shots sparks Congress alert

There has been a security alert at the House of Representatives in Washington where the sound of gunfire was heard. The apparent shooting was in the garage level of the Rayburn building, which houses offices of members of the House. A police spokeswoman said there had been no arrests or injuries.

One report spoke of a person being taken out of the Rayburn building on a stretcher. ut the police spokeswoman said this may have been an unrelated incident. The buildings effected were locked down for a time with no one allowed to leave or enter. Security across official Washington was tightened after the Sept. 11 attacks. Congressional buildings have been evacuated several times since over perceived threats.
