Police in the UK have carried out a series of raids in an operation targeting people suspected of planning terrorist attacks overseas. Eight people were arrested at 18 addresses in different parts of England. Britain has been on high alert since four suicide bombers killed 52 people in coordinated attacks on London’s transport network on July 7, last year. All four attackers were British Muslims. It is reported that of the seven people still being held, five are foreign nationals and that they have been detained on alleged activities relating to Iraq. With a Muslim population of around 1.7 million, many angered by UK foreign policy in the Middle East, some analysts say Britain is a fertile recruiting ground for Islamist extremists.
