Doctors say the former Indonesian President Suharto is suffering from fresh internal bleeding. The announcement comes almost three weeks after the 84-year-old was taken to hospital in the capital, Jakarta, with similar complaints. His condition is said to be deteriorating. Suharto was ousted in 1998 amid street protests and riots. He has suffered several strokes since then. During his 32 years in power, living standards rose in Indonesia – at the expense of political freedoms. Critics claim he and his relatives illegally amassed up to 35 billion euros. This month charges that Suharto embezzled 470 million euros of public money were dropped because of his poor health, angering his opponents and human rights activists who blame him for hundreds of thousands of deaths during his rule.
