Montenegrins vote in a referendum on Sunday on whether or not they should remain part of the union of Serbia and Montenegro or become fully independent.
The country’s pro-independence government says ending the union will bring economic development and a faster route to the European Union.
Brussels this month suspended talks on closer ties over Belgrade’s failure to arrest war crimes fugitive Ratko Mladic.
The pro-union camp claims Montenegro is too small to survive alone and cannotafford to lose out on jobs, education and health care that can be provided by their more populous neighbour.
Observers from the OSCE will be monitoring the vote.
